OBRA Art is happy to present Parade, the new solo exhibition of Jomad in Paris.

Carnival tradition in the Caribbean dates back to the mid-18th century, when slavery was still a reality. In those days, carnival was much more than just a party: it was a way of reviving collective memory and satirically portraying scenes from everyday life.

Having grown up in this spirit, the question arose: "And if this were my last painting, what would I want to say to the world? I simply wanted to express the joy of being. The opportunity to wake up one morning and live another day, when so many others haven't had the chance. It becomes an innate, uncontrollable performance that unfolds before our eyes like a parade. The abundance that makes us who we are every time we wake up. A connection to an immeasurable parade. A predominant nature greater than our desires, far greater than the 'I'. That feeling of pleasure when you think about it. These are works that speak of resilience and meaning. Accepting the good fortune we already have. The state of being and wholeness."

Jomad attended Paris 8 University, studying architecture, civil engineering and aeronautics. Now self-taught in acrylic painting, her work is moving towards the figurative, having previously experimented with aerosol lettering. Jomad is an artist with a particular interest in faces and expressions. In her paintings, her subjects evoke their sensitivity and the unveiling of certain popular codes. She attempts to pay tribute to them by illustrating their history and environment. Moments in life reflecting their dedication, emotional experiences and contexts. Her works highlight a contemplative vision of cultural cross-fertilization and reflect a desire to blend genres.

OBRA Art opened its inaugural exhibition in Barcelona in May 2023 with a presentation of works by Miriam Dema and Chidy Wayne.

Miriam Dema currently lives and works in Barcelona. Her work is a tribute to the beauty of imperfection and the generosity of life in moments of splendour. She seeks to represent the presence of humans in everyday elements and nature, depicting scenarios that evoke warmth and relaxation and include elements of Mediterranean culture. She uses wax crayons and oil pastels for their imprecision and roughness, and usually works with oil paint on wooden boards, painting intuitively and from memory.

Chidy Wayne is a Spanish-Guinean multidisciplinary artist based in Barcelona, working across painting, sculpture, illustration and music. Seeking work that is both aesthetic and conceptual, he creates a personal code of signs and motifs using quick, bold strokes that present universal themes of existence, identity and internal conflict — influenced by the artistic avant-garde as well as ancestral and cultural elements.

The exhibition was held in a typical Catalan apartment with a live performance by flamenco guitarist Rafael Ulecia.
